On the afternoon of November 19th, 1863, Abraham Lincoln stood
before a crowd of 15,000 people…
- About to dedicate the “Soldier’s National Cemetery” in Gettysburg, PA…
- Just 4½ months after the Union armies defeated those of the Confederacy at the Battle of Gettysburg.
While this three-day battle helped change the course of the Civil War, both the North and South suffered huge losses.
- In fact, from July 1st-3rd, the Union & Confederate armies suffered over 51g casualties and nearly 7100 deaths.
- And now, facing the fields that had birthed such carnage, Lincoln had to somehow find the right words to express both his grief & hope.
